Program AreasSocial Services:Harvest
America's bilingual and bicultural staff provides assistance through
direct services, counseling, information dissemination, referrals, and
case management for long-term family stability. Through its six area
offices, Harvest America provides emergency assistance which includes
food, clothing, shelter, utility aid, transportation and medical
assistance and referrals. Agency staff members provide referrals to
Beatriz Zapata, Catholic Charities in Salina, for immigration and
naturalization counseling to new immigrant families and coordinate with an
immigration attorney--at a very low cost to the participants--to ensure
the best possible service to those individuals.
Housing:Harvest
America's housing program works to ensure that the individuals and
families we serve are able to live in affordable and safe housing. Through
the Weatherization Program, the agency insulates
homes of low-income families to reduce their energy expenses and help them cut
utility costs. This program includes safety inspections, uses Blower-Door
technology to locate air-leakage in homes, provides insulation of walls,
attics and floors and encourages participant education. Other Housing
efforts include teaching simple repairs which encourage home
maintenance, large repairs such as roof work, electrical repairs, and
structural work, home ownership training and counseling, and referrals to
other programs. Health Promotion:Harvest America is dedicated to the promotion of responsible and healthy decision-making through programs, which offer culturally appropriate, language specific, targeted, up-to-date information in the following areas:· HIV Prevention · Smoking Cessation · Hypertension Prevention · Nutrition and Fitness Education · Violence Prevention and Intervention · Diabetes awareness and management · Breast, prostate and cervical cancer awareness Education:Harvest America offers community based education programs for age levels from early childhood to adult. The Shirley Rosenwasser Memorial Family Reading Program offers bilingual and intergenerational literacy classes, promotes strong parent-child relationships, and encourages a life-long commitment to learning.
